Winter

Don’t miss seeing the ice on the Greenbrier.

No doubt about it, the groundhog could see his shadow Tuesday, but he was crazy if he came out in the zero weather.

A little bit of all kinds of weather, mostly cold. However, Friday night, the temperature quickly rose to the 40s and we had a downpour of rain, plus lightning and thunder. The rain raised the river and broke the ice, moving it Saturday afternoon part the way. It jammed above Seebert and backed up to Buckeye. Below zero Monday and Tuesday.

The survey asked for by Senator Carl Gainer and Delegate Tom Edgar had the following results in Greenbrier and Pocahontas County:

Death Penalty: Yes 98; No 56.
Abortion Law. Yes 89; No 84.
Teacher Pay Increase: Yes 87; No 85.
Hunting License Increase: Yes 91; No 80.
Severance Tax, Coal: Yes 109; No 47.
Oil or Gas: Yes 107: No 47.
Timber: Yes 108: No 48.
Unionization of County Employees: Yes 25; No 131.
Civil Service for Deputy Sheriff: Yes 74; No 82.
Sunday Hunting: Yes 120; No 152.
Fire Arms Registration: Yes 29; No 144.
Permit for doe hunting: Yes 55; No 114.
Value Added Tax: Yes 51; No 88.
18 year old vote: Yes 114, No 58.
Constitutional Amend. for 18 years old vote: Yes 111; No 6.
Strip Mining: Yes 71; No 86.

BIRTHS

Born to Specialist Four and Mrs. Jeryl P. Duncan, at Camp Kue Army Hospital in Okinawa, a daughter, named Michelle Lee.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Friel, of South Amherst, Ohio, a daughter name Trisha Lyn.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Howard Showalter, of Newville, a son, named Melvin Howard.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Clinston Dulaney, of Hillsboro, a daughter.

DEATHS

Lee Stewart, 74 of Mill Point; burial in the Pleasant Green Cemetery at Seebert.

Mrs. Emma Dulaney Waugh, 71, of Marlinton, a daughter of the late Thorton and Leanna McCoy Dulaney. Burial in Mountain View Cemetery.

Edgar Moffett Williams, 55, a son of Mrs. Rosa Poage Williams and the late E. H. Williams. His father preceded him in death by twelve days. Burial in Mountain View Cemetery.

Delbert (Shorty) Sheets, 62, of Westover; born at Green Bank, a son of the late Ila Elizabeth Sheets. Burial in Pleasant Hills Cemetery.

Frank Allen Bennett, 45, of Durbin; burial in the Bennett Cemetery at Frank.

Mrs. Annie Eliza Mann, 86, of Covington, Virginia; born in Greenbrier County, a daughter of the late Augusta and Sallie Humes Shafer. Burial in the Falling Springs Cemetery in Falling Springs, Virginia.
