Fifty Years Ago

Thursday, December 3, 1970

David Lyle Moore, twelve year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Granville Moore, of Huntington, killed a six-point buck Monday. This was his second time hunting.

Harry McCloud killed a nice buck last Thursday, his fourth deer killed, all on Thanksgiving Days, all from the same stump in Cal Price State Forest.

Larry Aiken suffered some frozen fingers while hunting on Williams River last week. He killed a deer but he and some companions lost their way and were in the woods late.

Beartown State Park

Governor Moore announced last week the official acquisition of 107 acres at Beartown on Droop in Southern Pocahontas and the designation of the area as Beartown State Park. Bear-town is a most interesting place of rock formations and ice can be found in the crevices in summer.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR

State Superintendent Daniel B. Taylor has announced that Mrs. Beatrice Gladwell has been selected West Virginia’s 1971 “Teacher of the Year.” This project is sponsored by LOOK Magazine in cooperation with the Chief State School Officers.

A committee representing the West Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers, the West Virginia Education Association, the Junior Department of the Federation of Woman’s Clubs and the State Department of Education made the final selection…

We believe Mrs. Gladwell’s love for children, her skill as a teacher, and her active work in professional, church and civic groups were decisive factors in her selection for this award…

DEATHS

Lokey V. Jordan, 62, of Lima, Ohio, formerly of Durbin; burial in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Lima, Ohio.

Robert Lee Gray, Sr., 63 years, 11 months and 1 day, of Augusta, Georgia, formerly of Frost; a son of the late John and Mattie Newcome Gray. Burial at Hill Crest Highway I, South Augusta, Georgia.
