Fifty Years Ago

Thursday, November 6, 1969

Mrs. George Broce, of Buckeye, got the surprise of her life last week when a wild turkey flew into her yard. She got a .22 and put a bullet right through the neck – which is pretty good. The hen weighed about 10 pounds.

Several reports were received of snakes out on Sunday, a mild November 2.

– – –

Snow flurries Tuesday with two inches of snow on high mountains Wednesday.

On a visit to the County Clerk’s office last week we found an interesting operation going on. A young man, Fred Ridenour, of the Genealogical Society of Salt Lake City, Utah, is microfilming deeds, wills, marriages, birth and death records up to 1900. This work is being done all over the United States, and the records will be available then at one place in Salt Lake City. It is considered a vital part of the work of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints – the Mormon Church – and is supported by their tithes.

County Income

According to figures released by the Chamber of Commerce, the per capita income from Pocahontas County for 1968 was $2,040, a decrease of $64 from $2,104 in 1967. (We believe this decrease reflects changes at the Green Bank Observatory.) Twenty-three counties had less income per person, so, of course, thirty-one had more. Hancock has the highest at $3,403 and Lincoln has the lowest at $1,344.

Our retail sales also dropped from $7,992,000 to $7,735,000.
