Vivian Melton

Vivian M. Hill Melton departed this life January 8, 2014, at the Good Shepherd Hospice Center, Sebring, Florida, following a short illness.

Born October 3, 1918, at Hillsboro, she was the youngest of 10 children of the late John Abraham E. and Mary Elizabeth Campbell Hill.

Vivian graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1936 then attended nursing school in Charleston where she met and married Shelby L. Melton. They lived in Charleston until 1960 when they moved to Florida. She was employed at Montgomery Ward until her retirement in 1977. She continued to work several years for her church’s childcare center.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Mary Claire, Miriam H. Jones, Eula H. Hogsette, Maye H. Alderman, George Winters, John Clifford, Aaron Sterling, Herbert Graham and Sherman Glenn; and a daughter, Jeannie.

She is survived by four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; 10 nieces and nephews; and a special friend and caregiver, Hedra Burke.

Funeral service was in Lake Wales, Florida, with interment in South Charleston.
