South Carolina man charged with negligent homicide

John Anthony Mazzuch-elli, Jr., 51, of Duncan, South Carolina, has been charged with negligent homicide in the death of Roger Cain, 72, of Marlinton.

Mazzuchelli was traveling north on Rt. 219 near Renick January 9, when, shortly before 7:30 a.m., he attempted to pass a tractor trailer on a solid line and hit Cain’s vehicle head-on in the southbound lane.

Cain was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia, where he died as a result of his injuries.

Following the accident Mazzuchelli rented a vehicle at the Greenbrier Valley Airport and continued on his way to Snowshoe.

According to Sergeant Herby Barlow of the West Virginia State Police – Marlinton Detachment, authorities in Greenbrier County contacted him Monday even-ing requesting assistance in serving a Negligent Homicide warrant on Mazzuchelli.

Trooper R. A. Waid, Trooper Daniel Dillon and Pocahontas County Sheriff Jeff Barlow were called in to help with the search.

Dillon spotted the rental vehicle at Pocahontas IGA and detained Mazzuchelli. Waid served the warrant and processed him.

Mazzuchelli was taken to Greenbrier County where he was arraigned before Magistrate Brenda Smith and released on $5,000 bond.

A hearing date has not been set.
