OUR ARMY AND NAVY BOYS
Word has been received that Willis Hansford, son of Mrs. M. M. Hansford, of Marlinton, has arrived safely in Japan. Willis is a veteran of World War II.

Private Kenneth Faulk-nier, of the 86th Heavy Tank Battalion, Combat Command Battalion, stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, spent 14 days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Guy R. Faulknier. He left Thursday for Camp Kilmer, New Jersey, for reassignment to duty.

Private William L. Waugh is home from the Air Force with an honorable discharge. He was stationed at San Antonio, Texas. His brother, Hubert L. Waugh, also of the Air Force, is home on a 15-day leave. He is stationed in Georgia. These young gentlemen are sons of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Waugh, of Dunmore.
WEDDINGS
On Friday evening, August 10, Miss Anita Joyce Dunbrack was united in marriage to Johnny Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Nelson, of Huntersville, at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Winters Dunbrack. … Mr. Nelson, an alumnus of Marlinton High School, served with the Marine Corps during the war and is now employed by DuPont in Waynesboro, Va., where they will reside after their return from a Northern honeymoon.

Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Rickett, of Slaty Fork, announce the marriage of their daughter, Helen Elizabeth, to Warren Osbert Riggleman, son of French Riggleman and the late Georgia Riggleman, of Monterville.

Some issues since, you wrote something relating to wolves attacking human beings. This brings to mind an anecdote related by my father and involving the late Henry Pyles, of Beaver Creek. Information had come to the Swago country that Henry had been in trouble with some wolves, but nothing definite was learned. In a day or so, my father went to mill at Mill Point where he saw Henry. Henry was a mute, and since my father did not know the sign language, he borrowed Henry’s paper and pencil and wrote an inquiry as to the affair.
The Pyles boy’s answer was tense and to the point. “In mountain, three wolves running, Henry climb a tree.” While, no date can be fixed, the occurrences must have been shortly after the Civil War, this, because my father was not in Pocahontas for some ten years prior to the war.
Also, I have heard Aunt Malinda Griffin tell a wolf story. She had come down from the “Griffin Place” in the Buckley Mountains to do some errand at Buckley’s near the mouth of Swago. While returning homeward along the wilderness trail, she heard a peculiar yelping behind her. It did not resemble the yelp of a dog, and since rumors of wolves had been afloat, Malinda threw herself into high gear. Soon another yelp gave notice that the pursuer was gaining. The girl secured a good cudgel and took refuge on a leaning tree. In a few moments, a huge wolf came bounding along the path and without pause, continued on toward Cummings Creek.
DEATHS
On Thursday, July 26, 1951, death claimed Ernest E. Oldaker, a beloved and respected citizen of Durbin. Funeral service was held from the Durbin Methodist Church with interment in the family lot at Bartow Metho-dist Church cemetery.
Mr. Oldaker was married to Link Irene Burner; he was a son of the late Lafayette D. and Elizabeth Anne Dawson Oldaker… The deceased took an active part in community, fraternal and civic work in addition to the activities of his church. Time and again, this leading citizen was elected a member of the Town Council of Durbin.

Earl P. Shinaberry, of Clover Lick, aged 32 years, died August 10, 1951, from injuries received in an automobile wreck near Clover Lick. Funeral service from the Poage Lane Church with burial in the Poage Cemetery.
It was a service for both father and son, as the father, Charles Shinaberry, aged 73 years, died from a heart attack upon the news of the death of his son… Charles was a son of the late Abram and Mildred Buzzard Shinaberry; a leading citizen of his community and a prosperous farmer…
On January 15, 1910, there was born to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Barnes, a baby girl, who was given the name of Mary Susie Barnes. At the age of 11, in Akron, Ohio, she accepted Christ as her personal Saviour.
Coming back to Marlinton, she worked in every department of the Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church where she was faithful member.
She was joined in happy wedlock with Finley Roosevelt Morris, and to this union were born four children. Mr. Morris preceded her in death some years ago.
On March 28, 1947, Susie Morris and Carl E. Boggs were joined in happy wedlock. Shortly after their marriage, God called Carl to carry His message to all the world, and so she became a devoted minister’s wife…
On August 1, 1951, at 12:45 a.m. God saw fit to call Susie to His kingdom of eternal rest, peace and happiness.
