The relationship between the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and the Pearl S. Buck Birthplace in Hillsboro dates to the origins of the Birthplace becoming a public museum in 1974.
Through the decades, the GFWC has raised funds for the birthplace to ensure it continues to keep the history and legacy of Pearl Buck alive. One of the biggest fundraisers is held at the birthplace, and women’s club members from around the state are invited to attend.
This year’s event, Saturday, August 22, will feature live music, games, self-guided tours of the birthplace and a silent auction.
Marlinton Woman’s Club member and state officer Debbie Gale has organized this event and is excited to welcome the women and their guests to what she thinks will be a wonderful day.
“This year, we’re having live music, and I think it’s going to really add to the event,” Gale said. “Myra Morrison is coming and she’s put together a four-piece band. We will also have Erica Marks and her two daughters playing.”
Barb Siers will perform with birthplace docent Phyllis Lubin-Tyler who will portray Pearl S. Buck’s mother in a skit.
While the event is usually for women’s club members only, Gale said if individuals are interested in participating, they can attend as a guest or guests of a member.
