Agnes McCloud was on her way to work at Denmar a couple of weeks ago, and when she came across the top of Buckeye Hill in front of Jim McNeill’s, the movement of sheep running around the opposite hill directly in front of her caught her eye. They were running so recklessly that she wondered what had scared them so badly. The thought had hardly crossed her mind when she saw a panther come loping into view along the same path the sheep had come along. She watched it run around the hill from left to right for several hundred yards before it disappeared from view in the same direction the sheep had gone. She stopped at the foot of the hill and told Mrs. Anna McNeill that a panther was chasing her sheep around the hill. About that time, a small bunch of sheep came tearing down out of the brush where they had disappeared a few minutes before and ran below the house next to the road. Mrs. McNeill said she would get in touch with someone and Mrs. McCloud started to pull back on the road. Just then, a vehicle of forestry or conservation workers passed, and she stopped them and reported what she had seen. There was some attempt made to locate the panther but without success.
A panther had reportedly been seen on Caesar’s Mountain a few days before this, in the vicinity where the one was killed and another captured a short time ago.
