Fifty Years Ago

Jane Beard Powell, 21-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William B. Powell, of Bartow, is a princess in next week’s Mountain State Forest Festival. The petite blue-eyed brunette was appointed by State Senator Lloyd Jackson.

Forest Festival

Susan Staggers will be crowned Queen Silvia XXXIV by Governor Moore at 2 p.m. Friday, October 2. She is the daughter of Congressman and Mrs. Harley Staggers.

Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, will be honorary parade marshal for the big parade at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

CORONATION

The annual Coronation for the King and Queen of the Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Department will take place during the Horse Show sponsored by the Fire Department October 4, 1970 at Sinking Springs Farm.

The candidates are soliciting donations at one cent a vote. Support the candidate of your choice:

Allen McNeel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Moffett McNeel, Jr.
Caroline Kellison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Kellison

Eighth Grade

Crown bearers will be Jimmy McCoy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lavern McCoy, of Droop, and Ronda Pritt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Pritt, of Droop.

GONE FISHING

Lindsey Sharp caught a 21 inch, 5-pound big mouth bass in his farm pond. Lindsey is the nine year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Sharp, of Huntersville.

BIRTH

Born to Mr. and Mrs. William Winters Hefner, of Hillsboro, a daughter, named Julia Lynn.

DEATHS

Mrs. Sylvia Wentz Curry, 73, of Marlinton; born in Ohio, a daughter of the late Clarence and Emily Smith Wentz. Burial in Mountain View Cemetery.

Miss Glenna Jean Wooddell, 39, of Arlington, Virginia, formerly of Bartow. She was a secretary at the Pentagon for the Air Force. Burial in Arbovale Cemetery.

Jesse Patterson Hannah, 77, of Elkins. Born at Slaty Fork, a son of the late Samuel D. and Amanda Moore Hannah. Entombment in Maplewood Mausoleum in Elkins.

Mrs. Julia Groves Robinson, of Orlando, Florida, former wife of Ted J. McElwee. Burial in Orlando, Florida.

Icie Gertrude Baxter, 65, of Marlinton, died in Indianapolis, Indiana, after becoming ill on a plane enroute from Charleston to Boise, Idaho. Her husband, George P. Baxter, preceded her in death. Burial in Edray Cemetery.
