Killed in Action
Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Rider received word that their son, Sp4 Samuel Dewey Rider, Jr. was killed in a combat operation at Cua Lai in Viet Nam Sunday, March 3, 1968. He was serving with the 25th Infantry Division and had been in Viet Nam since January 3. He was wounded in January and had recently returned to active duty after a month in the hospital.
Born near Marlinton, he was a son of Dewey and Daisy Adola Scott Rider…
Boys and Girls in Service
Sp5 and Mrs. Curtis Rider returned from six-months’ duty in Germany recently and are spending a 30-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Rider, of Marlinton… Mr. Rider will leave March 22 for a second tour of service in Viet Nam.
S.S.G. Donald L. Hill, who is stationed in Vietnam, is home on a 30 day leave with his father, Eugene Mitchell Hill, who is critically ill…
P. F. C. Billy McLaughlin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest McLaughlin, of Minnehaha Springs, has arrived in Vietnam.

Beverly Hill and Tommy Workman have been elected Miss and Mr. Red Devil of Hillsboro High School. Beverly will be crowned and Tommy honored at the annual Mr. and Miss Red Devil Coronation Ball, March 22 in the Hillsboro Gymnasium. Dance music will be furnished by the “Not Quite Five.”
Also to be honored at the dance are the elected Miss Red Devil attendants and escorts:

Eagle Scout Award
Steve Weatherholt, a member of Troop 33, Marlinton, has achieved the highest rank in the boy scout organization. He was presented with the Eagle Scout award at Hillsboro February 21. To attain this rank it is necessary that he earn 21 merit badges, in addition to proving that he has the qualities of leadership and maturity that will enable him to become a leader in his community…

Edgar – Dunbrack
Miss Mary Lou Dunbrack, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Dunbrack, of Marlinton, was united in marriage to George Thomas Edgar, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas C. Edgar, of Hillsboro, at the Warm Springs Presbyterian Church, in Warm Springs, Virginia, Monday evening, March 4, 1968.
DEATHS
Ronald Anderson Nottingham, 17, of Bartow, and Garland F. Talbert, Jr., 19, of Galax, Virginia, were killed Sunday morning, March 10, 1968, near the intersection of 250 and 28 east of Bartow, when their car hit a tree. Nottingham was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nottingham. Burial in the Arbovale Cemetery.
Forrest Ellison McKenney, 67, of Wheeling. Born at Marlinton, a son of the late J. V. and Lena Moore McKenney. Burial in the family cemetery.
Mrs. Maud E. Wanless, 57, of Minnehaha Springs, a daughter of the late Warner E. and Etta Ervine Bowers. Burial in the White Cemetery.
