WEATHER
The weather continues to be of the type that the “Old Timers” like to tell about from their youth with snow and low temperatures being an almost daily occurrence.
Several inches of snow fell on the ninth followed by 18 or more additional inches on January 13. The weight of the snow collapsed the porch roof on The People’s Store and Supply Company and the awning in front of the Home Products Market and did other damage around the area.
The State Road Commission reports an accumulation of 41 inches on Kennison Mountain.
Schools were closed on Monday and Tuesday of this week due to drifts blocking secondary roads.
Students
Suzanne Jett, senior journalism major at West Virginia University recently received the $600 top prize in the second of six monthly writing competitions of the William Randolph Hearst Foundation’s $50,000 journalism awards program.
The School of Journalism at the University received a matching $600 grant for its scholarship fund.
Miss Jett’s feature writing award put the School of Journalism in second place for top school honors in the nation…
Miss Jett is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Jett, of Marlinton.

Naomi Elizabeth Workman, of Hillsboro, will receive her A. B. Degree in elementary education from Glenville State College January 26, 1968.
Fireman’s Banquet
John A. Taylor, Deputy Fire Marshal for West Virginia, was the speaker at the Marlinton Volunteer Fire Department’s annual Banquet held January 16 at the Marlinton Presbyterian Church… Grey M. Cassell was the Master of Ceremonies.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Irvine, of Marlinton, a daughter, named Loretta Lynn.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Friel, of Marlinton, a son named Earl Douglas.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Copenhaver, of Marlinton, a son.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Houston Jefferson, Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, a son, named Houston James Jefferson, III. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Forest McChesney, of Marlinton, and Mr. and Mrs. Houston Jefferson, Sr., of Charleston.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. George Fenstermaker, of Frank, a daughter. The mother is the former Catherine Lambert.
DEATH
Mrs. Mary Frances Weatherholt Landis, 57, of Seebert, a daughter of Mrs. Florence Icie Sutton, of Huntersville, and the late Henry Weatherholt. Burial in the Oak Grove Cemetery at Hillsboro.
