Mary G. “Trudy” Workman Friel, 82, of Marlinton, passed away Thursday, August 15, 2024, at Pocahontas Center.

Born February 18, 1942, at Burnsides in Pocahontas County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Workman and Sarah Perry Workman.

Trudy grew up in Marlinton on Tannery Row and graduated from Marlinton High School in 1960. She worked for many years for the federal Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), later renamed the Farm Service Agency.

For several years, Trudy was a member of Central Union United Methodist Church in the Brush Country and later attended Marlinton Presbyterian Church and the Marlinton United Methodist Church after moving downtown.

Trudy lived an active life after retirement. She took up painting, traveled and particularly enjoyed outdoor adventures, including frequent hikes on the Greenbrier River Trail and kayaking on the river. She also loved taking long drives in the mountains, especially on the Highland Scenic Highway.

She was passionate about animals, and adopted a number of rescue pets, including her beloved dog, Phoebe, who survives.

Trudy is survived by sons, Greg, and husband, Andrew Reese, of Washington, D.C.; Mike, of South Charleston, and Rob, and wife, Jenny Workman Friel, of Hillsboro; brother, Walter “Fairley” Workman, and wife, Noreen, of Westminster, Maryland; sister, Judy Gum, and partner, Richard Bright, of Fishersville, Virginia; grandsons, Clay Friel, of Elkins, Chad Friel, and partner, Kristen Biggs, of Keyser, and Jeremy Dabney Reese-Friel, of Boca Raton, Florida.

She is also survived by her longtime companion, Pete Hefner, of Minnehaha Springs, and her best friend since second grade, Kay Beverage, of Marlinton.

In keeping with her wishes, the body will be cremated and her ashes interred at Mountain View Cemetery.

Family and friends are invited to honor Trudy during a Celebration of Life Saturday, October 5, 2024, from 11 a.m. to noon at Central Union United Methodist Church, 2535 Brush Country Road, Marlinton.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Humane Society of Pocahontas County or the Alzheimer’s Association.
