FIELD NOTES

D. S. Hamrick, of Monterville, was a caller at this office last Wednesday. He has just returned from a fishing trip to Michigan for pike and bass and up in Canada for trout. He has the distinction of killing the last big timber wolf in these parts as a boy of 18 years, back in 1908. This was a lone wolf which ranged the Gauley and Elk and Point Mountain country, taking heavy toll of sheep. Webster County offered a reward of $100 to kill the varmint. A hunt was organized and on the 8th day, young Daniel Stover Hamrick got the chance and killed the wolf. The Webster court refused to pay the reward under the too-thin point that the actual killing of the wolf was across the imaginary line into the county of Randolph. A lawsuit brought the money.

Five or six years before, John Gregory had killed the mate of this wolf and her two pups.

The following adventure with a rattlesnake did not happen this berry season, but it did happen some years since. The scene was in upper Pocahontas County and the time, berry season. A lady and her sister and her little daughter went a berry picking. The little girl came onto some especially fine vines overhanging a hole in the ground. She jumped down in the depression for to reach the berries. Her horror is better imagined than described when a great rattlesnake sounded his warning and tried to wiggle out from under her feet. However, she stood pat, with one foot just back of the snake’s head. Mother and aunt rushed to her assistance. There was no room for to reach the snake and kill it. Taking a chance, the ladies each grasped a hand of the little girl. With a pull and jump the young lady came out of the depression like she was on a spring. It was all too quick for the snake to coil and strike. The rattler was killed and it proved to be one of the largest of its kind.
