Thursday, June 10, 1948

The trip last week was over to Monterey town in the good county of Highland. The visit was in compliance with an invite from the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The occasion was the observance of Memorial Day.

The meeting place in Monterey is the fine shady lawn at the courthouse. However, the courthouse burned down, and the lawn is still cluttered up with building material and litter. However, the new courthouse is nearing completion, and a wonderfully fine building it is, too.

So the big meeting was held in the Presbyterian Church, across the street from the courthouse. In spite of the downpour of rain, there was a large congregation. The people came from several parts of the county for proper observance by solemn assemblage on this day of remembrance…

BEARS

The Sharp Bear Hunting Service checked in on three big bears last week.

On Monday, a big 358-pound bear was killed for the Vandevenders on Big Spring Branch of Elk.

On Tuesday, another big one was killed for the Green family on Elkwater, over in Randolph County. Then the latter part of the week, another call came from Elkwater to chase down another sheep killer. This bear had left the country and the hunt was fruitless.

Then on Saturday, the hunt was on Crooked Fork of Elk for the big bear that had raided the flock of George Gay. The bear was killed on Red Lick.
