This headstone for Winston Lacy, 1885 – 1950, was found several months ago during excavation work for the new bridge on Handley Road over Big Laurel Creek at the intersection of Handley Road (CR 17/1) and Williams River Road (CR 17/4).  The headstone was buried under one to two feet of overburden soil on the creek bank. It was retrieved by Chuck Kestner, who lives on Handley Road. He cleaned it up and placed it in his yard.

Mike Baranski discussed the rare find with Kestner, and decided he would attempt to determine the story behind it.

Why was it found far from any gravesite? Who was Winston Lacy?

The Pocahontas County Genealogy Group, which has published a series of nine In Loving Memory cemetery books, has no information about this particular name.

If anyone has information about Winston Lacy, or why a gravestone might have been in such a place, please contact Jaynell Graham at 304-799-4973 or jsgraham@pocahontastimes.com, and the information will be passed on to the genealogy group to be included in their archives.
