GolfBallsmThe Pocahontas County High School golf team lost its first match of the year to Notre Dame on September 2 at Raven Golf Course at Snowshoe. The Fighting Irish needed a stellar performance to edge out the high-flying Warriors and they got it.

Warrior senior Stephen Mick and sophomore BJ Wilfong were the low-ball medalists for the match with scores of 40. Matt Rao shot a respectable 45 and Austin Sharp kept the team in the 40s with a 48. PCHS’s total score added up to 173.

Notre Dame got excellent golf across the board. Seniors Jordan Brown and Alex Demary shot 41; and sophomore Austin Wilson and junior Elijah Knight both shot 43s, giving the Irish an overall score of 168.

Tygarts Valley came in number-three with a 186. Bulldogs Alex Hinzman shot a 44; Casey Martel, 45; Cody Grimmett, 46 and Jared Wegman, 51.

The Warriors followed up two days later with a 30-point win on the same course. This time, the Moorefield Yellowjackets joined the Warriors and Bulldogs in a three-way match.

PCHS got the low-ball medal once again when BJ Wilfong led all golfers with a stellar score of 36. Sharp shot a 44 and Mick and Rao both shot 45 to give PCHS an overall score of 170.

Moorefield and Tygarts Valley both scored 200. The Warriors improved to 4-1 on the season with the win. Thanks to PCHS coach Phillip Anderson for the information.
