Nellie Sponaugle

Nellie B. Sponaugle, age 95, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, died Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at her home.

Born May 27, 1921, at Frank, she was a daughter of the late Albert W. and Minnie B. McClung Gum.

Nellie married Paul R. Sponaugle October 19, 1947, in Oakland, Maryland. During the war years of the 1940s, Nellie worked at the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company as a “Rosie the Riveter.”

Nellie was a homemaker and a member of Purple Heart Ladies Auxiliary #122.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. Sponaugle; a brother, Albert Garnet Gum; and a sister, Anna Margaret Pellow.

She is survived by a daughter, Sheila Waldron, and husband, Michael; two sons, Larry A. Sponaugle and Ronald P. Sponaugle, and wife, Nancy; a granddaughter, Melinda Goodman, and husband, Jason; and great-grandchildren, August and Mackenzie.

Nellie was known as a gentle, kind person and loved to laugh. She will be remembered by all, especially her daughter, who gave her the greatest of care.

Interment was in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, Maryland.
