Nellie Bly Malcomb, age 97, of Raleigh, North Carlina, passed away Monday, February 2, 2015, at the home of her daughter, Sherrie Sue Smitley.

Born October 11, 1917, in Pocahontas County, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Maud Spencer.

For most of her life, Nellie Bly was actively involved in gardening, walking, visiting with family far and wide and serving faithfully in her local church. Her energy and enthusiasm endeared her to her family and friends, and her warm smile delighted all who knew her. Her tenacity and spunky attitude contributed to her long and full life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Gay Allen Gutshall and William Gerald Malcomb; sisters, Hazel Tracy, Margie Simmons, Lena Wagner, Marie Wooddell and Halley Spencer; and brothers, Virgil Spencer, Brady Spencer, Fred Spencer and Paul Spencer.

She is survived by Gaytha Allen and Harold Langolis, Fred and Linda Malcomb, Karen Maude Miller and Serrie Sue and Zane Smitley; eight grandchildren; eight, and soon-to-be nine great-grandchildren; as well as a large extended family of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Nellie Bly’s life will be held Sunday, February, 8, 2 p.m. at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Arbovale. Interment will be in the Arbovale Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be made in Nellie Bly’s name to Samaritan’s Purse (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene program) under Support and Memorial Giving at www.samaritanspurse.org.
