According to a press release from the Nicholas County Sheriff’s Department a murder/suicide occurred at the Go-Mart in Craigsville, Friday, September 21, at approximately 3:25 p.m.

During a child exchange at the Go-Mart, Vonly Ray York, 69, of Shady Springs, shot his son-in-law, Luke Charles McElwain, 38, of Webster Springs. When deputies arrived on the scene, York turned the gun on himself. Both York and McElwain died at the scene.”

McElwain was a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan and a 2006 graduate of the School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg.

He joined the staff at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital in 2012, working part-time there as an emergency department physician.
