Editor;
Before retiring, I had the privilege of being a lawyer and serving in our courts. I experienced firsthand the inalienable right of due process and equal justice under law, which are the pillars of a free society that guarantee personal liberty and enable the pursuit of happiness.
In essence, our justice system ensures that every person whose liberty is threatened by the government has the right to a hearing or trial before an impartial judge. This right is applicable to all people in the United States of America.
However, recently, our government has, in some instances, disregarded or limited these rights in an attempt to send a message and gain control over the issue of illegal immigration.
Concern about these recent government actions does not speak to any position about immigration itself but rather the threat that such actions pose to every person’s own guarantee of due process of law.
To remain a great nation, we must be steadfast and true to our founding principles, ensuring that they are applicable to everyone.
