This letter responds to last week’s epistle from Joe Kaffl who is convinced that Democrats are the party of socialism and communism – and want to lead America down the same path that Venezuela has taken – to disastrous results. I am concerned that the Republican Party, under the leadership of Donald Trump and his merry band of Musketeers, are adopting nihilism as their creed in order to justify the dismantling and destruction of most institutions of society and government that were established to improve the lot of everyday people in the U.S. and around the world. Cynicism, pessimism, and the lack of empathy for anyone who needs help because of age, sickness, disability, unequal opportunity, or loss of the means for self-support are the guiding principles of the Trump Admini- stration. Massive spending cuts for Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security must be made to pay for making permanent Trump’s 2017 tax cuts for the wealthy. Starting a trade war with the world because, supposedly, everyone else is taking advantage of America is necessary to get even and show the world who is boss. Trump undermines U.S. support for Ukraine and NATO – consistent with the wishes of Vladimir Putin. This “burn it all down” approach is massively destructive and detrimental to everything that the rest of world thought made America great since the end of World War II. It’s un-American and plainly indecent.
