John Matheny

John Mitchel “Junie” Matheny, Jr., age 92, of Lewisburg, formerly of Green Bank, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at Seasons Place with his daughters by his side.

Born August 1, 1924, at Green Bank, he was a son of the late John Mitchel Matheny, Sr. and Althea Gardner Matheny.

John was a member of Hebron Baptist Church in Green Bank and served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He owned a sawmill for many years on Wesley Chapel Road. He loved the people who came along looking for wood, sawdust or just a good story. He also witnessed to many at the sawmill.

He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II as a Postmaster in the South Pacific, writing money orders and ensuring the soldiers received their mail. He was honorably discharged as a First Class Petty Officer. He then went on to serve in the United States Air Force.

John and his loving wife, Betty Wooddell Matheny, were married in Green Bank. She preceded him in death January 23, 2015.

In addition to his parents and beloved wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph, Clyde and Conell; and four sisters, Audrey, Alma, Wilma and Polly.

He is survived by two daughters, Deb Matheny, of Maxwelton, and Donna Daughtery, of Staunton, Virginia; his grandchildren, who adored him and loved their playtime and storytelling together, Jodi Nicholas, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Josh Beverage, and wife, Gloria, of Lewisburg, Max Beverage, and wife, Cassy, of Ashland, Michigan, and Jami King, and husband, Nick, of Staunton, Virginia; and his great-grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Madi and Lexi Nichols, Drew and Cooper Beverage, Gunner and Kynnlee Beverage, Conner Peters and Sawyer King.

Graveside service was January 14 in the Arbovale Cemetery with Military Honors by the Pocahontas County Veterans Honor Corps.
