Joan Smith

Joan Regina Staud Smith, age 80, of Elkins, departed this life Friday afternoon, September 12, 2014, at the Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center in Elkins, surrounded by her family.

Born Wednesday, September 5, 1934, at Elkins, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Thomas and Nellie Adams Staud.

Joan was a 1952 graduate of Elkins High School. She had worked as a Postal Clerk for nine years and then Post Master for 17 years at the Bartow Post Office. She was a member of the Saint Brendan Catholic Church and was an avid Bridge player.

Joan married Sidney Conrad Smith on July 16, 1955, at the Saint John Bosco Catholic Church at Huttonsville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Rita Land and Donna Carpenter.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Sidney Smith; three sons, Michael Joseph Smith, and wife, Rose, of St. Louis, Missouri, Conrad Sidney Smith, of Beverly, and Patrick Alan Smith, and wife, Maryellen, of Elkins; a daughter, Debra Ann Sharp, and husband, Ronnie, of New Hope, Virginia; two brothers, Thomas Staud, and wife, Paula, of Elkins, and Christopher John Staud, and wife, Jenny, of Marietta, Georiga; two sisters, Kathryn Sue Totten, of Elkins, and Regina Palomo, and husband, Joe, of El Paso, Texas; and seven grandchildren, Sean, Benjamin, Emily, Joseph, Mary Beth, Jacob and Abby.

Funeral service was September 16 at Saint Brendan Catholic Church where the Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated with The Very Rev. Donald X. Higgs VF. Interment was in Saint Brendan Cemetery in Elkins.
