Fifty-Years-Ago

Thursday, February 25, 1965

The weather has been see-sawing back and forth from mild to sub-zero. Two below was reported at Tennant’s Service Station above Frost Monday morning, ten to twelve in town. This followed a brief snow squall Sunday night as the temperature fell from the 50s.

The Junior Play, The Barretts of Wimplole Street, directed by Mrs. Alice Moore and Sam Brill, has the cast as follows:
Dr. Chambers – Michael McMann; Elizabeth Barrett – Harriet Johnson, alternate, Judy Thomas; Wilson – Martha Davison, alternate, Alice Kelley; Henrietta Barrett – Virginia Miller, alternate, Minnie McLaughlin; Arabel Barrett – Judy Baxter, alternate, Linda Hockenberry; Octavious Barrett – Jimmy Dilley, Alternate, Roger Maddy; Septimus Barrett – Bobby McComb; Alfred Barrett – Larry Davis; Charles Barrett – David Sparks; Henry Barrett – Albert Wade; George Barrett – Dale Hollandsworth; Edward Barrett, Papa – Raymond Pryor; Bella Hedley – Harriet Goddin, alternate Nancy Diller; Harry Bevan – Joe Sharp; Robert Browning – John Dean; Dr. Fred Waterlow – Rick Griffin; Captain Surtees Cook – Dolan Ervin.

BIRTHS
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Jordan, of Marlinton, a son, named Chris Allen.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Carr, of Buckeye, a daughter, named Chawna Belle.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sharp, of Marlinton, a daughter, Caroline Louise.

DEATHS
Mrs. Stella Bruffey died in Baltimore, Maryland; service at Emmanuel Methodist Church near Hillsboro.
David Ellis Ervin, 73, a lifelong resident of Cass; burial in the Arbovale Cemetery.
Porter J. Sharp, of Stony Creek; a son of the late Giles Sharp and Catherine J. Sharp. He was a good citizen, never failing to help his neighbors or friends when in need. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Mrs. Rella Alice Tallman Waugh, 70, a licensed practical nurse of Elkins; born at Stony Bottom, a daughter of the late Benjamin Boon and Mary Etta Tallman. Interment in the Maplewood Cemetery.
Mrs. Rella Friel died at Denmar State Hospital. Funeral service at Liberty Church in Green Bank.
Mrs. [Lee] Bessie Copenhaver Hammons, 65, of Marlinton. Funeral at the Marlinton Church of God; burial in the Kee Cemetery.
Ernest Jones Weiford, 90, a son of the late John and Alice Weiford, and member of Marlinton Presbyterian Church. Burial in the Mountain View Cemetery.
Mrs. Olive Mariah Kidd, 76, formerly of Beard; a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Bennett, of Jumping Branch. Burial in the Morningside Cemetery in Renick.
James Clark Sharp, 35, of St. Clair, Michigan, formerly of Valley Head; a son of the late Garnett L. Sharp. Burial in the Valley Head Cemetery.
