RECOGNITION
Miss Ilean Walton has been the official river and rainfall comparative observer at Buckeye for many years. Today, it was announced by the U. S. Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), parent agency of the National Weather Service, that Miss Walton is one of 35 observers selected to receive the John Campanius Holm Award.
John Campanius Holm Awards, created in 1969 by the National Weather Service, are made annually to honor volunteer observers for outstanding accomplishments in the field of meteorological observations. The award is named for a Lutheran minister who is the first person known to have taken systematic weather observations in the American Colonies.
The Reverend John Campanias made records of the elements, without the use of instruments, in 1644 and 1645, near the present site of Wilmington, Delaware. These observations were published in Sweden by his grandson, Thomas Campanius Holm, in 1702.
Miss Walton was honored for her outstanding service to the National Weather Service, the community of Buckeye, and other river communities along the Greenbrier River in providing river and rainfall data for the issuance of river forecasts in southeastern West Virginia.
Miss Walton, also, consistently reports occurrences of severe weather to the Charleston, West Virginia, Forecast Center and provides special observations anytime they are requested…
The National Weather Service has nearly 12,000 volunteer observers who make and record daily weather observations in all parts of the United States…
