GROUNDHOG DAY
Not a cloud in the sky on Monday, February 2, so there is no doubt about it – the groundhog saw his shadow, foretelling another six weeks of winter.
AIRPLANE CRASH
The wreckage of the Piper twin engine Commanche and the bodies of the pilot and two passengers were found last Thursday morning, January 29, at 9:14 a.m. The location was near the bottom of Clover Lick Mountain, about a quarter of a mile from the Linwood-Clover Lick Road, across the creek from the Edgar Dilley home on Lee Ruckman land.
The plane was sighted from a blue-gold police helicopter carrying Sgt. E. M. Armstrong, of Webster Springs, who headed the search, and Trooper John Starcher, pilot, and Trooper Don Cook, co-pilot. They landed nearby and got to the site quickly and other police and the Marlinton and NRAO Emergency squads soon joined them.
The pilot was thrown about 15 feet downhill. The other two men were held in their seats by seat belts.
According to Federal requirements, an autopsy was performed on the body of the pilot, Nick Courtney, 60. The bodies of the other men, Robert Baker, 40, and Bill Finigan, 49, were sent on to Pennsylvania…
