This is the last six weeks of groundhog weather. Though interspersed with many mild days, we have had some of the coldest and snowiest days since February 2, and March has really showed herself, with three below zero last Wednesday and snowstorms both weekends.
SNOWSHOE
The top of Cheat in a snowstorm is a place of rare beauty, and thousands ignored bad travel conditions to go to Snowshoe this past weekend – to be rewarded with seeing the spruce, looking like it had been dipped in silver and then frosted with snow, as well as seeing sophisticated skiing activities so new to our county.
Jean Claude Killy was there giving autographs, and portions of the movie with Jim Stacy were made as planned. Killy paced the NASTAR race at 29 seconds Saturday. You could stand close by and watch as possibly a hundred participants raced down the hill trying to make all the gates. Just like watching the Olympics, although admittedly these weren’t all experts. Harper Nelson, of Marlinton, who has been skiing less than three months qualified with a time in the 40s – not a bad time and a success story of learning on shorter skis.
On Sunday, Killy took the Cup Run Slope in a minute and 22 seconds, at a speed of 48 miles an hour.
