BASKETBALL

The Warriors upped their record to 7 wins in 12 outings by defeating rival Tygarts Valley at Mill Creek Friday, 71 -62.

Jim Ryder grabbed 14 rebounds while teammate Gary Cassell followed with 11.

Senior Gary Sharp paced the Warriors with 19 points. Jim Cutlip and Gary Cassell had 17 and 16 points respectively.

MORE ABOUT CHEAT

Cheat Run and Cheat Mountain are named from Jacques Cheathe, a roving French Huguenot who settled in 1724, where the river flows into the Monongahela in Pennsylvania, and gave the river his name.

My source is Life Magazine, special double issue, “The Wild World,” December 22 1967.

Life picked Shavers Fork and the Cheat from all the rivers in the world to cover in this special issue. The section was titled – The Cheat.

“There is wilderness close to home on an unspoiled river in West Virginia.

“Enjoy it while you can. If something is not done soon to protect this great river from mining and timbering, it will die.”
