Bear Rescued

Chilled to the bone by icy Cranberry River, skinned arms and torn uniform, Conservation Officer Charles Scallon held on to the tiny, limp and nearly drowned bear cub he had scooped up with a fisherman’s dipnet.

Up to his chest in the cold water, officer Scallon pushed the dipnet-laden bear cub to a willing trout fisherman on a flat rock. On the bank, Scallon saw the cub was breathing faintly. He pushed its chest. Some water trickled from the cub’s mouth. It was not enough. The little animal was too weak.

Scallon put his mouth to the fading cub’s nose and blew his breath into its body, rhythmically. The little bruin responded, breathing became normal. Weighing only about seven pounds, Scallon took the cub home and fed it milk with a bottle. In good health, the bear cub was sent to the French Creek Game Farm where it will be cared for and again released in the wild…
