Monday night’s Marlinton Town Council meeting, recorder Tina Barkley explained to council that the next election will be for a shorter term due to the state law requiring all municipal elections to be on the same cycle as county elections.
Currently, the Town of Marlinton elections are every four years, but are not on even years like the county elections, which are every two years. To get in sync with the county, Barkley said the next town election term will be for three years instead of four years.
Every election after that will be four-year terms. Council discussed the possibility of two year and four year terms, but voted against making this change.
Barkley said she will have to make changes to the election ordinance to reflect the next election’s shorter term. She will get the paperwork in order and share it with the town’s attorney to make sure it is all in order in time for the 2027 election.
In other action, council approved:
• Resolution to program remaining ARPA funds to the water system improvements project.
• to open a bank account for the water system improvements project.
• Water system improvements project resolution #1.
• Wastewater system improvements project accounting services agreement amendment.
• Draw request #4 for the Town of Marlinton CDBG-MIT storm water project.
• Halloween activities to be held Saturday, October 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the town of Marlinton. Trunk or Treat will be located at Discovery Junction.
Marlinton Town Council meets the first Monday of each month, excluding holidays, at 7 p.m. in the municipal building auditorium. The public is welcome to attend in person or online.
