Dennis Melvin Doss, 76, of Hillsboro, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at home, surrounded by his family.

Born February 1, 1948, in Whitesville, he was a son of the late Grace and Moncie Doss.

Dennis was a proud U.S. Army Veteran. He spent two years in active duty and was stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey, before traveling overseas to Germany to serve his country. He was awarded a National Defense Service Medal – Sharp Shooter (M14) before receiving an honorable discharge.

He spent his childhood in Whitesville, before moving to West Haven, Connecticut, with his family for work. He married his wife, Gloria, in 1972, and it wasn’t long before he found himself back in the mountains of West Virginia. He worked in concrete for 50 years, side by side with his brothers. He also was a very talented chef and later in life built swimming pools.

All who knew Dennis, knew his heart of gold and wonderful sense of humor. Dennis never met a stranger, and he loved to talk. He cared deeply for his family and friends. His absence will be felt by all who loved him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald “Buster” and William “Billy;” daughter, Lisa Ann Doss; and granddaughter, Angela Garretson.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gloria Doss; daughters, Lisa Doss Beverage (Danny Wilfong), of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Louann McMillion, of Hillsboro; sister, Evelyn “Mutt” Nelson, of Connecticut; brothers, Norman (Faye), of West Haven, Connecticut, Fred (Joyce), of Lewisburg, and Randy, of West Virginia and Florida; grandchildren, Erica Faulknier (Lucas), Daniel Hoke (Keri), Brittany Hoke, Jesse Hoke (Elizabeth), Gabrielle Hoke, Alicia Hoke and Ashley Garretson; 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and a loving Yellow Lab named Buddy and a cat named Jasper.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, April 4, 2024, at 1 p.m. at Lantz Funeral Home in Buckeye with Pastor Vince Deeds officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsboro with Military Honors by the Pocahontas Veteran Honor Corps.

The family will receive friends from noon until time of service.

In lieu of flowers, Dennis asked for donations to be made to the Pocahontas County Senior Citizens and to the American Cancer Society.

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”
