According to Pocahontas County Emergency Management Director Mike O’Brien, at approximately 1:30 p.m. Monday, June, Pocahontas County 911 received a call from the Garmin GPS company reporting they had received an emergency notification of an injured caver in the Mace area of Pocahontas County.
Shavers Fork Fire Rescue along with the Valley Head Fire Department were initially dispatched to the scene. Units arrived to find members of the National Speleological Society who were attending a nearby conference. It was reported that a male individual fell approximately 30 feet while exploring the cave.
Patient extrication took approximately seven hours.
The patient was safely removed around 9:30 p.m. and was transported by Aeromedical ambulance to a trauma center for evaluation.
