Labor Day Celebration
Labor Day will be properly celebrated in Marlinton Monday afternoon, September 6, with a special program of music and speaking. Among the speakers will be a deputy of the I. O. O. F. grand master and an officer of the Grand Council of Junior Mechanics.
A special invitation is extended to all lodges and organizations of the community to attend in a body.
The procession will form at the Odd Fellows Hall at 1:30 o’clock, and then march to the High School grounds for the program.
FIELD NOTES
Swallows, literally by the thousands, swept over this town last Thursday morning, wiping insects from the skies. Put this flight at twenty thousand. I checked about a mile of light and telephone lines crowded full of the birds – at the same time there were plenty of them on wing and the tops of fruit trees were working thick with them.
As far as I could make out, there were more cliff and barn swallows than other kind, with plenty of rough winged, bank and tree swallows, too.
WEDDING
On Thursday, August 26, 1948, at the Presbyterian Manse in Marlinton, William Hamrick and Miss Alice Wooddell were united in marriage by the Rev. Roger P. Melton.

GOLDEN WEDDING
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Ray celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary August 22 by entertaining many of their relatives and friends at their home near Cass. A basket lunch was served on the lawn at noon and an enjoyable time was had by all. Many nice gifts were received. Of the 13 children, seven were present and 11 grandchildren…
DEATHS
Mrs. Corena Bussard Shinaberry, aged 80 years, daughter of the late Morgan and Rhoda Syms Bussard and widow of the late W. T. Shinaberry, died Friday, July 30, at 8 o’clock p.m… Funeral service was held at Alexander Memorial Church. Burial was in the family cemetery near Dunmore. Although an invalid, this saintly woman will be missed in her community. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian church.

Claude Lesley Cornell, aged 74 years, died August 25, 1948. On Saturday afternoon his body was buried in the family plot in Mt. View Cemetery. The funeral was held from the Methodist Church… He married Miss Luberta Scott… Their children are Norman and Cecil Cornell and Mrs. Frank Gass.

Mrs. Maude Reed Ware, aged 70 years, widow of the late P. T. Ward, died Monday morning, August 30, 1948. On Wednesday morning, her body was laid to rest beside the grave of her husband in St. Brendons Cemetery near Elkins, the service requiem high mass being held from the St. Brendon’s Catholic Church in Elkins… More than 40 years since Mr. and Mrs. Ward came to Pocahontas County to make their home. They were good people and good neighbors. Until laid aside by failing health, Mrs. Ward was a bookkeeper in the Bank of Marlinton…
