If you are among those who could not attend the first annual Pocahontas County Athletic Boosters Banquet last week, we want to inform you that you missed a real treat. Not only was the food excellently prepared by Mr. Sheibley and his cooks, but the entire program was delightful.
Gary McPherson, former great athlete of Green Bank High School and presently assistant basketball coach at West Virginia University, was the speaker. It is refreshing to hear coaches today give attention to religion and the role it plays in our life as Mr. McPherson did. He also pointed out the importance of academic achievement which is essential in playing athletics today.
Mr. McPherson’s speech was built around the word Pride and these key letters represented Positive Thinking, Religion, Initiative, Determination and Education, which he said are the essential ingredients of a successful athlete…
STUDENTS
Ten young newspaper carriers have won $500 scholarships in the 1971 Newspaper Agency Corp. Carrier Scholarship Program.
Among the ten carriers for the Gazette or the Daily Mail for one year or longer were; Tom Morrison, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Morrison, of Frank, formerly of Marlinton, and Zed Steven Weatherholt, son of Mrs. Lena Weatherholt.

The College of Agriculture and Forestry of West Virginia University recently recognized academic and leadership achievement of 195 of its undergraduates and recent graduates at its annual Honors Convocation. Among those honored were John W. Jett, of Marlinton, Division of Plant Sciences, and Calvin J. Sharp, of Camden-on Gauley, Division of Forestry.

Outstanding swimmers at West Virginia Tech were given awards at the second annual swimming team banquet held at the Mountaineer Room in Belle. Among the eight winning letters was George Meadows, of Marlinton.

Billy Sharp, Charlie and Tommy Robinson, Richard Faulknier and Claude Brown will leave Friday for Indianapolis, Indiana, to attend the races. They earned the trip by selling the Charleston Gazette.

Lee S. Barlow, 71, of Marlinton, a son of the late Silas L. and Leva Duncan Barlow. Burial in Mountain View Cemetery.
Mrs. Mabel Showalter Wilfong Doyle, 69, of Mace, a daughter of the late Richard and Nancy Tracy Showalter. Burial in the Mingo Cemetery.
