Of course, I’m thankful for books, and so it is only fitting that November has been a big month for the release of new novels by bestselling authors—always good news. I’ve been ordering books like crazy, trying to keep up. Let me tell you about four new novels coming out; you should see them soon in your local branch.
John Puller, hero of Zero Day and The Forgotten, is back in David Baldacci’s newest novel, Escape. Puller is a combat veteran and a special agent with the U.S. Army. He is called upon to help resolve the nation’s toughest crimes. Imagine the shock when his older brother Robert was convicted of treason and national security crimes. Robert has now managed a near-impossible escape from prison—and the best person to track him down and bring in him alive is his younger brother, right? Sure. Except Robert is also being hunted by others who don’t really want him alive.
It’s been more than 10 years since Anne Rice has added an installment to her popular series, The Vampire Chronicles. She has veered into other areas, writing novels about Jesus, angels and then dabbling a bit with werewolves. But this month she’s back, or rather, her unforgettable character/vampire Lestat is back in Prince Lestat. If you are a Rice fan, I don’t have to tell you that this novel is about everything, and hits many time periods. If you are new to Rice’s vampire world, I would recommend going back to the beginning with Interview with the Vampire, her 1976 novel that started this whole vampire craze. It’s rich, detailed and introduces a world that covers 11 novels.
I’m pretty sure Stephen King doesn’t sleep. Not only does he have a new novel out, but it was just announced that his 1978 novel The Stand will be made into four (four!!) movies. Have you noticed how many of King’s novels have movie adaptations? Uncanny.
Anyway, his newest release is titled Revival. There’s a new preacher in town, Charles Jacobs. He meets and mentors young Jamie Morton. Then, in true King fashion, a terrible tragedy strikes, and Charles Jacobs is run out of town. Fast forward about 30 years, when Charles and Jamie meet again and form an unlikely and, of course, horrible partnership. This novel has been called rich and disturbing, with a terrifying ending. Vintage Stephen King.
Speaking of revivals, Patricia Cornwell has brought us her 22nd Kay Scarpetta novel this month with the publication of Flesh and Blood. It’s Scarpetta’s birthday, and she is planning a trip to Miami with her husband, FBI profiler Wesley Benton. But things never go as planned, and she receives a call that a popular high school music teacher has been murdered. This is just the first victim of a serial sniper, making incredible shots, leaving no forensic clues, and killing people who don’t seem to have anything in common.
