F.F.B.L.
A. R. “Bob” Templeton, Monongahela Power Company agricultural representative visited Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Hevener and their son, Randall, in connection with the Farming For Better Living program. Sponsored by West Virginia University, Monongahela Power and local businessmen, the FFBL program has a sizable membership in Pocahontas County.
A feeder calf program and sheep operation highlight the production of Hevener’s 126-acre farm on back Mountain Road.
Hevener rents an additional 252 acres for his livestock. His cattle herd is comprised of 35 cows and 29 calves with purebred Hereford and Charolais bulls. He keeps both breeds of cattle.
Hevener has forty ewes and two Hampshire rams in his breeding flock. Plans are to increase this to fifty ewes in the near future.
Several improvements have been made recently to the Hevener farm including sixty rods of new fence, the clearing of five acres for pasture, the addition of a stock water pond, and eighty-ton silo, and painting of the farmhouse and outbuildings. In addition, Hevener limes according to tests and applied twelve tons this year and four tons of fertilizer in cooperation with ASCS.
Mr. and Mrs. Hevener have two sons. Timothy, 25, is a general foreman for Trailer Mobile in California. Randall, 14, will be a freshman at Green Bank High School and won the Golden Horseshoe contest in West Virginia History last year.
A past sheriff for Pocahontas County, Hevener is chairman of the church and pastor board at the Church of the Brethren. He is also a director of Farm Bureau. His wife taught Bible School this spring and keeps tourists in two rooms of the farmhouse.
