Lady Warriors win two, lose one

The Pocahontas County High School Lady Warriors soccer team played three games last week, winning two and losing one. 

PCHS vs. Nicholas County – August 25

At half-time the Lady Warriors were ahead 5-0. They scored two goals in the second half and held Nicholas at 0 for a final score of 7-0 Pocahontas. 

Scorers were seniors Kira Bircher, Cloey Sharp, Laila Calhoun, Alexa Taylor and Elizabeth Hefner, and freshman Kelsi Taylor.  Assists on these goals were from seniors Sage McLaughlin, A. Taylor, K. Bircher and freshman Katlyn Simmons.

Additional shots on goal were from forwards and midfielders, junior Savannah McMillion, sophomores Rayna Smith and Mackenna McKenney and freshman Simmons.

Defenders and midfielders, led by seniors Emily Casto, Amelia Rose, Hefner and McLaughlin, junior McMillion, sophomores Macaden Taylor, Hazel Riley and Smith, and freshmen Sara Stull and Emma Riffe, cleared the ball out of the backfield 39 times.

Goalkeeper junior Sienna Bircher saved 12 goals of Nicholas County’s 12 shots on goal. 

This was the team’s first shut-out of the season.
 
PCHS vs. Elkins – August 27

At half-time the Lady Warriors were behind 0-1. They scored one goal in the second half and Elkins scored two for a final score of 1-3 Elkins. 

Scorer was senior forward Alexa Taylor.

Additional shots on goal were from forwards and midfielders, seniors Kira Bircher, Laila Calhoun, Elizabeth Hefner and Sage McLaughlin, and junior Savannah McMillion.

Defenders and midfielders, led by sophomores Macaden Taylor and Hazel Riley, seniors Emily Casto, Amelia Rose, Hefner, McLaughlin and Cloey Sharp, and junior McMillion, cleared the ball out of the backfield 43 times.

Goalkeeper junior Sienna Bircher saved 13 goals of Elkins’ 16 shots on goal, and allowed 3. 
 
PCHS vs Bluefield – August 31

At half-time the Lady Warriors were ahead 2-0. They scored five goals in the second half, including a free kick and a penalty kick due to Bluefield fouls. Bluefield took several shots on goal in the second half, but the Lady Warriors held them at 0 for a final score of 7-0 Pocahontas. 

Scorers were seniors Kira Bircher, Cloey Sharp and Laila Calhoun, and freshman Katlyn Simmons. Assists on these goals were from junior Savannah McMillion and seniors Alexa Taylor, Sage McLaughlin and K. Bircher.

Additional shots on goal were from forwards and midfielders, seniors Elizabeth Hefner, McLaughlin and A. Taylor, junior McMillion, sophomore Mackenna McKenney and freshman Chasity Wimer.

Defenders and midfielders, led by seniors Amelia Rose, Emily Casto, Hefner and McLaughlin, junior McMillion, sophomores Macaden Taylor, Hazel Riley and Rayna Smith, and freshmen TaLisa Arbogast, Sara Stull, Allyson Alderman and Emma Riffe, cleared the ball out of the backfield 50 times.

Goalkeeper junior Sienna Bircher saved 15 goals of Bluefield’s 15 shots on goal.  She also came out of the goal for several steals and tackles to prevent additional shots on goal.

This was the team’s second shut-out. 

The Lady Warriors’ record is 2 wins, 1 tie, and 1 loss. They have scored 17 goals, saved 50 and allowed 5. 

Games this week are away vs. Shady Spring on Thursday, and at PCHS vs. Braxton County Saturday at 1 p.m.
