BOYS AND GIRLS IN SERVICE
Navy Ensign Roger L. Orndorff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Orndorff, of Durbin, has completed the Officer Indoctrination School at the Naval Education and Training Center in Newport, Rhode Island.
The six-week course is designed to prepare newly commissioned officers for duty in the Navy staff field corresponding to their civilian profession.
In the first five weeks, Orndorff studied Navy history and traditions, personnel administration, military law, close order drill and other general military subjects structured to acquaint him with an officer’s duties and responsibilities…
He is a 1976 graduate of West Virginia University and is married to Janet Copen, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Copen, of Cass.
CURIOUSITIES
We sent two items off to the West Virginia Geological Survey at Morgantown for identification last week and quickly received an answer, which we now share with you.
One is a rock brought in by Brian Burgess, of Marlinton, which he found in the road in front of his house. He broke it open and it looks like a big nut with a kernel or pit in the middle. Edward R. Nuhfer, Economic Geologist, wrote about it as follows:
The spherical nodule is a concretion with a fossil clam near the center.
Concretions from by deposition of mineral matter around a central nucleus. The nucleus may be fossil or a small mineral grain. They grow very rapidly; modern, recently formed concretions have even been found to surround bottle caps, spark plugs which have been discarded in coastal areas.
The other items were what Mrs. Neil Horner called Indian Beads. She says they are plentiful in the limestone soil near her home. These we have had a long time and neglected getting the identification.
The Indian Beads are actually segments of the stalk of a marine animal called a crinoid. Mr. Nuhfer says they occur as common fossils in this area.
