William Mirl “Bill” Tyler, age 76, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2016. He was a son of the late Mirl and Ella Tyler, who lived in Marlinton.

In 1961, he married Linda L. Jenkins, of Clarksburg, who remained his beloved wife until he was called home to be with the Lord.

William joined the Harrisonburg Police Department in 1964 working with the family of civil servants and helped protect the city’s residents for more than nine years. He was presented a gift of appreciation in 1969 by the management of the Rockingham Farm Bureau for foiling a robbery attempt at their store. The individual was in the process of stealing multiple firearms. He was named Police Officer of the Year by the Harrisonburg Kiwanis Club in 1972. He was well-respected by his co-workers in the department. William left the police department in 1973 and started a very successful window and siding company, Tyler Home Improvement, which he operated until his retirement in 2012.

Bill was a very honest, kind, hardworking and devoted family man. He always enjoyed spending time with family, watching classic western movies, working puzzles and working on any project that required the use of hand or power tools. Anytime someone in the family was in need of something, or had a project that needed completed, he was always there to help. Bill was a member of the Dayspring Church of the Nazarene in Mt. Crawford, Virginia.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Debbie Tyler Murdock, and husband, Michael, of Aurora, Colorado; two sons, Mike Tyler, and wife, Stephanie, of Centerville, Virginia, and Mark Tyler, and wife, Liana, of Harrisonburg, Virginia; six grandchildren, Aundrea Tyler, Hannah Tyler, Ashley Tyler, Elizabeth Tyler, Allyson Tyler and Mia Tyler; and a brother, George Tyler, of Marlinton.

Funeral service was February 22 at Westside Baptist Church with Pastors Troy Pearson and Doug Wade officiating. Interment was in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.
