Vause Carlsen

Vause Poage Smith Carlsen, age 83, of Flushing, Michigan, died Friday, November 18, 2016, at Pray Home in Clio, Michigan.

Born December 25, 1932, at Point Pleasant, she was a daughter of the late John Griffith Smith and Veta Lee Williams Smith.

Vause graduated from Marshall College and Ohio University. She married Paul J. Carlsen, Jr., September 2, 1955, in Huntington. He preceded her in death February 17, 2010.

Vause retired from Hurley in 1992 as a Speech and Language Pathologist. She was a Vocational Deacon with the Episcopal Church, serving Trinity Episcopal Church in Flushing, Michigan. She was a volunteer Chaplain with Hurley, Chemo Cap Ministry, Humane Society and the Pet Therapy Program. She was a member of the Flint Rock and Gem Club.

She was a granddaughter of West Virginia’s first state road commissioner, the late Alexander Dennis Williams and Lula Waugh Williams, who grew up and began married life in Cass and Marlinton.

She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Dusco, and husband, Richard, and Paul Carlsen, all of Flushing, Michigan, and John Carlsen, of Clio, Michigan; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Per her wishes, the body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Eastern Michigan Food Bank or a charity of your choice.
