There may still be some snow clinging to the ground in the northern shade, but spring is just around the corner and gardeners are getting ready for the planting season.
Area gardeners gathered at Green Bank Library last Saturday for the annual seed swap.
Tables were filled with seed packets for fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers – all ready to be planted around the county.
The seeds were collected by members of the Pocahontas County Grow This! team and were either donated by fellow gardeners or businesses such as Southern States in Marlinton and Mary’s Heirloom Seeds, based in Ben Wheeler, Texas.
All the seeds that remained after the swap will go into the seed library which was started last year at the Green Bank Library. This year, the seed library will be in an old card catalog that was donated by the Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library.
The seed swap was a kick-off for the growing season and is one of many gardening events that will be hosted by the Grow This! team.
Coming up is the plant swap on Saturday, May 31, at 11 a.m. at the Green Bank Library. Growers are invited to bring extra plants to share with others.
