Roy Lee Landis, age 90, of Marlinton, passed away Thursday, July 9, 2026.
Born November 14, 1935, he was a son of the late Roy Brown and Margie Kidd Landis.
He was raised in the Hillsboro and Buckeye area. His family moved 22 times before Roy Lee went into the Army.
He served in the Army from 1954 to 1956. Afterward he returned home; then a journey with Buck Dever led him to Baltimore to find work. This is where he started his driving and delivery career, which he loved and continued for many years. After delivering milk and oil in the Baltimore area, he returned home to Pocahontas County where he started driving for Burns Motor Freight. That is where he built so many friendships and made countless memories that he lived to share forever.
His next journey was to Motor Parts with his sister, Charlotte, and her husband, Floyd Davis, Jr.
Roy Lee worked there for 43 years, fixing radiators and small engines and turning brake rotors, but most of all, he made more friends there and shared in the lives of so many people.
In addition to working at Motor Parts, Roy Lee and Junior started driving school buses.
This was the beginning of a 38-year career where, once again, Roy Lee mattered and built lasting relationships and earned the respect of all the kids.
After his so called “retirement” he took on his next position. He enjoyed making the community a cleaner, neater and better place to live. He could always be seen weed eating, mowing, picking up trash, cutting brush or shoveling snow. The last several years, you would see him on the mail route with Susie every day, and if your mailbox was broken, he would put in a new one.
Somehow in this busy life, he raised five wonderful children on Browns Mountain and taught them all the meaning of respect, how to work hard, fix about anything and, most of all, to be the best “Dad” a man can be.
Roy Lee’s legacy and memory will live on forever with all who knew him or just saw him doing what he loved to do around the community. You never knew where you would see him – but it was usually with a weed eater in his hand.
He was the best!
He was preceded in death by a son, Darrell Landis; daughter-in-law, Kathy; and brothers, Letcher and Curtis.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Susie; sons, Brian Landis, and wife, Corrine, Brad Landis, and wife, Cindy, and Tony Landis; daughter, Kelley Barnett, and husband, Brooks; sisters, Alice Waugh, Charlotte Davis, and husband, Floyd Jr.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces; nephews; and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pocahontas Cooperative Parish Food Pantry or Pocahontas County Senior Citizens Meals on Wheels program.
