As a way to celebrate West Virginia’s 150th birthday, students at Pocahontas County High School entered a friendly reading challenge. Three teams competed to see which could read at least 150 books in 2013.
Boothe’s Book Readers (Joy Boothe’s class), Sleuths (Glenda VanReenan’s class), and Cool Readers (Susan Chappell’s class) exceeded the goal of 150 in the course of three months.
With a total of 175 books, Boothe’s Book Readers took third place. Cool Readers was second with 218 books and the Sleuths took first place with 230 books.
The top eight individuals were also recognized for their achievements and were awarded gift certificates to Amazon.com: first place went to Morgan Leyzorek with 64 books; second, Ida Moyers, 35 books; third, Marilyn Creager, 27 books; fourth, Lara Baudler, 24 books; fifth, Isaac Hise, 23 books; tied for sixth, Goldie McClure and Austin Hubbert, 21 books; and seventh, Bryce Galloway, 19 books.
The students were rewarded with a pizza party provided by Family Resource Network, which partnered with PCHS in the challenge. FRN also purchased a Kindle Fire for a drawing and gift certificates for the teachers involved.
Winner of the Kindle Fire was Julia Chastain.
