When you’re working with rail lines that are more than 100 years old, there are going to be a few bumps along the way.
The ties and track can rise and sink due to wear and tear, as well as weather conditions that cause erosion.
To make sure that all train rides in Pocahontas County – at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park and in Durbin – are smooth, Mountain Rail has purchased a tamping machine that will help fix issues on the line.
Mountain Rail volunteer and investor Jack Sanford said the new piece of equipment uses laser technology to show where the tracks should be to make a level and smooth ride.
“There are wheels on the front, and they give a reference to how much they have to raise the track or tip it one way or the other,” Sanford said. “It’s pretty sophisticated.”
The piece of equipment was brought into Durbin last week and will be put to work this week.
In addition to making sure the ride is smooth; Sanford said the adjustments made will also prevent derailments.
The Mountain Rail schedule is full of exciting adventures this summer which kick off with the Parade of Steam at Cass on Saturday, June 14.
