Johnny Pritt
Pocahontas County Assessor

You may have heard of the Motor Vehicle Property Tax Adjustment Credit, and as your Assessor I would like to help you better understand the process.

This new credit goes into effect January 1, 2024.

The first rebates will be issued in 2025, after your 2024 WV Income Tax form is filed.

The first thing to know is, that in order to qualify for any rebate (credit), you must pay your property taxes on time.

Payment for the first half of the 2023 Personal Property tax will not qualify for the credit.

The second half 2023 Personal Property Tax payment will qualify for an income tax credit if paid between January 1, 2024 and March 31, 2024.

If you plan to file for this rebate (credit), you should wait until after January 1, 2024 to pay the second half of the 2023 Personal Property taxes.

Refunds are not issued through the county tax office.

Credits and rebates are calculated with your WV State Income Tax Filing.

If you owe state income tax, the rebate will be applied first to the tax that is owed. You will receive any remaining balance.

Who Qualifies?

Individuals, Partnerships, S-Corporations, LLCs and C-Corporations.
