Mazie Burgess

Mazie Lee Hammons Burgess, age 79, of Marlinton, passed away Monday, August 28, 2017, at Pocahontas Center in Marlinton.

Born January 1, 1938, at Watoga, she was a daughter of the late Lee and Binnie Copenhaver Hammons.

Mazie attended the Marlinton Church of the Nazarene. She was employed by Hanover Shoe Company, later West Virginia Shoe. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, watching humming birds, flowers, camping, traveling, Sunday car rides, and spending time with her family, especially her four granddaughters and great-granddaughter.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Goldie Burgess; and seven brothers, Oakey Hammons, Theodore Hammons, Cecil Hammons, Lacy Hammons, Dewey Hammons, James Hammons and Harold Hammons.

She is survived by her husband, Loy Burgess, whom she married March 28, 1959, in Marlinton; two daughters, Sherri Howe and Connie Sharp, and husband, Lindsay, all of Marlinton; a son, Wayne Burgess, and wife, Debbie, of Marlinton; four granddaughters, Mandy Irvine, and husband, Christopher, Selina King, and husband, Kevin, and Amy Kelley, and husband, Billy, all of Marlinton, and Muranda Morgan, and husband, Ross, of Elkins; a great-granddaughter, Natalie Irvine, of Marlinton; and a sister, Helen Friel, of Buckeye.

Funeral service was held September 1 at Lantz Funeral Home in Buckeye with Pastor Sam Felton officiating. Interment was in Mountain View Cemetery Mausoleum in Marlinton.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to Pocahontas Center employees.
