Mary Frances Cassell, age 99, of Arbovale, peacefully passed away Saturday, January 18, 2025.

Mary spent her life on this earth being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

After graduating from Green Bank High School, she married William Delbert Cassell. They spent their lives operating their small farm in the Pine Grove Community while raising their only child, Judith Ann.

“Miss Mary” opened up her home and spent countless hours as a wonderful, caring and loving babysitter for many children. When her own two grandchildren, John Michael and Kristy, were born she devoted her time to watching them until they reached school age. After both grandchildren entered school, she worked at the Boyer Motel.

In her later years, Nan, as she was known by her family, was content to stay in her cozy home, crocheting and enjoying the many friends and neighbors who dropped by to visit her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lora and Wesley Vandevander; her husband of 65 years, William Delbert Cassell; sisters, Ruth Pugh, Leona Simmons, Arlene Rexrode and Maxine Harden; brother, John Vandevander; son-in-law, Mike Kane; and great-granddaughter, Chloe Kane.

She is survived by her daughter, Judith Ann Kane, of Green Bank; grandchildren, John Michael Kane IV, and wife, Melissa, of Green Bank, and Kristy Kane Rhea, and husband, Matt, of Harrisonburg, Virginia; and great-grandsons, Michael Kane, Cooper Rhea and Brody Rhea.

The funeral service will be held Friday, January 24, 2025, at noon at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of service.

Burial will be in Arbovale Cemetery.
