The town recently advertised for interested individuals who would be willing to serve on one of two committees. The first is to reorganize the Town’s Planning Commission. This committee will be tasked with updating the current Comprehensive Plan, which was adopted in August 2019. The State recommends updating plans every seven to 10 years. With elections and a new council coming up, beginning July 2027, this council decided it would be better to begin sooner than later. We need at least one more candidate. Interested candidates should send a letter of interest to the Town office.
The second committee has one volunteer and needs four more for a five-person committee.
Here is an invitation to attend a virtual meeting Thursday, September 24, at 10 a.m., in the Municipal Auditorium of the town office.
This meeting will provide an opportunity to introduce curious folks to the Mon-Forest Towns Partnership and explain what it means to be on a Mon-Forest Towns Partnership Action Team. The meeting will explain how to plan a Community Action Meeting. Emily Cook is a Community Projects Manager with the MFTP and will send introductory materials later, but here’s the gist:
Mon Forest Towns Partnership connects gateway communities to the National Forest through regional collaboration, strengthening local businesses, and supporting downtown connection to outdoor re-creation opportunities. One project example will be the Marlinton Downtown Trailhead site, a $2 Million project in proximity of the Verizon Cell Tower at the corner of Third Avenue and Ninth Street.
With projects going on in all the 12 Mon-Forest Towns, the workload has outgrown staff capacity. Consequently, being part of a town action team means helping to move a project you care about forward in your town and meeting on a regular basis, to keep up with your Town’s ideas and opportunities.
Following this initial meeting, the next step will be planning an in-person Community Action Meeting where the Action Team members, and Emily, to pull together a team of folks to move the town’s core projects forward.
