May is set to be a busy month that will kick off a busy summer. The first “First-Friday” of the 2025 schedule of events is set for May 2 at Discovery Junction. Watch this paper for the time of day which (should be) the same as last year. The theme for the May 2 program is a combination of Celebrating our Youth and Recognizing the Woman’s Club. The youth will provide entertainment on stage. Woman’s Club members and Youth will exhibit their art in the Opera House next door to Discovery Junction. All of this, plus all the regular fun and games that local businesses and organizations provide.
The importance of recognition for participating members of the local Woman’s Club cannot be overstated. Marlinton’s Main Street planters have depended on the club’s commitment for the beautification of our town for many years. We commend each one for their efforts. They showcase to all of us, every year, how the often-unknown volunteers behind the scenes make a huge difference in all of our lives. The Town of Marlinton celebrates our youth, our Woman’s Club, and the volunteers who make First Fridays work for our residents and visitors.
Speaking of visitors, by now many of you should have seen the flyers that the Pocahontas County Convention and Visitors Bureau put together to announce a two-day weekend in Pocahontas County. The flyers promote the Grand Opening of the newly constructed Monday-Lick Trail set for May 17, as well as a schedule of events beginning May 16 leading to the Opening Celebration.
Parking will be available at the Greenbrier River Trail lot on Ninth Street near the cell tower.
The Monday-Lick Trail is located one mile south of Marlinton, off the Greenbrier River Trail.
At the March Marlinton Town Council meeting, council voted to work with the CVB, so far as we could, by providing additional dumpsters for trash and allowing overflow camping in area at the north end of Stillwell Park. Specifically, this is the grassy area between the large pavilion and the gate, at the north end of the field, and NOT in the park itself. Overflow parking will be in the area.
With regard to overflow camping, we encourage all visitors to fill the surrounding camping venues first. Those commercial accommodations provide utilities. It is not the Town’s intention to compete with private businesses, but to be available for the overflow of tents and campers, who should not expect the convenience of water, sewer or electric hook-ups.
In closing, Pocahontas County is blest to have an active and experienced Convention and Visitors Bureau staff, committed to planning all such county events. The Town looks forward to the positive change this new trail will add to our region.
