Memorial Day launches summer season 2024. School is officially out for the summer. Boys and girls are on their summer vacations, and we want them to be safe. We are always concerned about the safety of others.

We are blest to have bike paths and the Greenbrier River Trail that comes through town. The GRT provides a safe bicycle path to Stillwell Park.

When riding in town, riders and parents should be aware of some specific town ordinances;  …§ 75.30 RIDING ON SIDEWALK is PROHIBITED. No person shall ride any bicycle upon any sidewalk within the town. (Res. passed 6-3-2019) Penalty, see § 75.99 AND… § 75.31 BICYCLE HELMETS FOR CHILDREN. (A) Definitions. For the purpose of this section, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning. BICYCLE. A human-powered vehicle with wheels designed to transport, by the action of pedaling, one or more persons seated on one or more saddle seats on its frame. AND… § 75.26 LIGHTS AND REFLECTOR ON BICYCLE; SIGNAL DEVICE; BRAKES. (A) Every bicycle when in use at nighttime shall be equipped with a lamp on the front which shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front and with a red reflector on the rear of a type approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles which shall be visible from all distances from 50 feet to 300 feet to the rear when directly in front of lawful upper beams of head lamps on a motor vehicle.

Other requirements for bicycles and various Town ordinances can be viewed by going to the Town Home page at: Home – Town of Marlinton (townofmarlintonwv.com), then click on Marlinton, WV Code of Ordinances.

With Memorial Day still fresh on our minds, this Thursday, June the 6, will be the 80th Anniversary of D-Day – the 1944 landings on the beaches of Normandy.

D-Day was the military operation that initiated the effort to liberate western Europe from Nazi Germany. The boys and girls of this summer can enjoy a summer of freedom, because many of those young men and women did not come home after that summer.

God Bless America.
